How to install the Cygwin X-Server
- Insert
the Cygwin Installation CD in the CD-Rom
Drive.
- Open
My Computer, and double-click on drive D: (assuming that’s the CD-ROM
drive).

- Double-click
on the setup icon to launch the Cygwin setup.

- Click
Next>, then Select Install from Local Directory and click Next>
again.

- Accept
the settings shown below, and click Next>.

- Select
“D:\Cygwin Packages” as the Local Package Directory, then click Next>.

- On the
next screen, expand the Net branch and click on the
symbol
next to inetutils

- Scroll
down, and expand the XFree86 branch, then click on the
symbol
next to XFree86-base. This will
select it and several other packages for installation. Finally, click Next>.

- Scroll
down and also click on the
symbol
next to XFree86-xwinclip.

- Once
all of the packages have been installed, do not create a Desktop icon, and
do not add an icon to the start menu, instead, once the installation is
complete, follow the instructions below to create the Shortcut to launch
X-Windows. Click Finish, let the
Post-Install script run, then click OK on the
Installation Complete dialog box.


How to create the X-Windows Desktop Shortcut
- Open
the Desktop Folder for All Users in My Computer.

- Create
a New Shortcut to “C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\startxwin.bat”.

- Name
the Shortcut “Start X-Windows”.

- Change
the default icon to the icon from the file “C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\XWin.exe”
(you’ll have to Browse… for this).
